in light of yangzhaox's suggestion, I'm thinking about changing Insomnium icon. So I've used a tool my previous company made to generate a few app icons. Let me know which one is your favourite. Thanks! The most upvoted one will be Insomnium's new icon!

Wow! You're right - that aspect is really taken care of when using an AI art model trained with stolen art!

Also, using this argument, you could just argue away free open-source work altogether. Programmers should be paid for the value they contribute after all, no?

You do not want to host a contest because you think that's exploitation? That's entirely up to you and to how clear you make the terms and conditions of the competition to the competitors.

I do not judge the entirety of this project by its logo.

Of course they should be paid. This is why finding a good way to sustain a FOSS project is important (without diverging from its core-value).

The problem with modern society is that many people/institutions that don't do much shit are getting a lot of resources, while lots of things that are contributing actual value to soceity get little or none.

And most people just waste time time commenting on shit while not doing anything.

I won't host a logo contest because crowdsourcing could result in hundreds of artists working for free without the guarantee of payment, which some might perceive as exploitation. I think that is way more unethical.

Each artist decides if he/she wants to participate, knowing the conditions associated with such participation. No one is forcing anyone to work, no one is raising unjustified expectations. Which part of this is "unethical"?

It isn't. They are not running a big company which could easily afford artists, nor would they be dangling a reward in front of the participants' faces, which ultimately only one of them will receive. This argument is just as invalid as their claim that they used "ethical trained AI" for their current logo ideas.

I looked into the software they used - Lexica - for a little, to hopefully be able to verify their claim.

Turns out, Lexica uses 2 possible Models: Stable Diffusion, which is most definitely not ethically trained, and Lexica's own "Aperture 3.5" model.

There is no publicly available information on the training data used to make this Aperture model work. I have read through 7 different articles covering the model, and none of them mentioned training data sources at all.

On Lexicas Discord, the question of the ethical perspective of this Model has come up a few times, though. There were some press people and PhD candidates who were looking to have this question answered for different reasons. The developers always responded to other people with other questions, but never did they once even attempt to answer to those who asked about how the model was trained, or what it was trained on.

The only, and I mean only crumb of information I have found was a sole developer's answer, where they stated that they "cannot give an answer to this question"

So, either archy here leaked information that was meant to be kept confidential, or their claims are bullshit.

I don't know about the rest of you, but until I see further evidence/information on this topic, I know what I'll think.

Of course, there is always the possibility of me being wrong, not researching thoroughly enough, etc. . If this was the case: My genuine apologies.

I chose flow/float just because all the other ones have way too much clutter. Even if you pick that one, I think you should remove the background gradient and stars.

no. For insomnium to have a proper logo, I need to start with the designer on the concept first - as well as figuring out how to pay him eventually. That will likely be for v1.5 onwards.

Before that I will be sticking with these ad hoc logos generated by AI.

The amount of detail in the current icons would be lost when down sized and would make them less readable, also a icon should really be in a vector format not raster.

Here is my submission it's rather simple but that isn't a bad thing with an icon. (Also it's svg so can be resized without loosing quality)

Looks more like a TV? But it has too much detail to look good when scaled down to 32x32 or 64x64.

Too much detail. Simple logos are nice on the eyes (except when they are forced to look simple, looking at you Firefox!)
