I love this tool and I don't want to deal with using my phone which can possibly break one day which would be a much worse outcome than SDA breaking.

We don't even have an alternative to this currently, what tool does scrap.tf even use for their trade bots?

I highly recommend that you should use the steam mobile app, if you are able to. Write down your recovery code and keep it in a safe place. You can transfer an existing authenticator to the official steam mobile app, but that does cause a 2 day trade ban.

If you are interested, I maintain steamguard-cli. It's capable of reading the exactly the same maFiles that SDA does, so you don't have to deal with a trade ban. It doesn't have a UI, so if you aren't really comfortable using a terminal, I would recommend you use the steam mobile app. You can download it here: https://github.com/dyc3/steamguard-cli/releases

Read the quickstart here: https://github.com/dyc3/steamguard-cli/blob/master/docs/quickstart.md

Please don’t give up on SDA
It's really the best validator I've ever used.

One of my fears has come true.

It was never meant for security, only for simplicity. I don’t even want to imagine what’s ahead for all of us who used it. For every trade, you’ll now have to use your phone…

@Jessecar96, first, thank you for all these years. I believe it’s not just about money, but please reconsider this. Allow a one-time purchase option for all the years I used it for free, and then charge a monthly fee for future use. I don’t need updates or new features, and I don’t need authentication codes (if I can get them on the Steam mobile app). All I need is for the Steam trade confirmation window to be functional. Not improved, just functional.

If I pay monthly for things that waste my time, I’ll gladly pay for things that save it—and this app is definitely one of them.

I created a new rust based authenticator:

Feel free to use however its not polished yet.

To be blunt, I did use it for security. I don't know too much about OS security, when Updates are missing, so, my thinking could have been wrong until now, but: Phones give (security) updates only for a limited time. I think nowadays it got a bit better, though. Anyways, I am of that type, who likes to still use their phones for normal and non-sensitive stuff, even after they don't receive (usually Android) updates anymore. The issue is, Steamguard needs internet and it would be installed on an Android OS in my case, which doesn't/won't get updates anymore. I know Windows has pros and cons, too. But only looking at OS updates, they allowed to upgrade to the newest version for free (I am talking about big jumps like W10 to W11 and previous ones). So, you didn't need to re-buy a complete new device to get OS Updates again. With Windows and SDA being updated, it felt safer for me to use this combination, because the phone alternative would mean to buy complete new phones every few years. (Not sure if that is a good comparison, but I feel similar with Mobile Banking vs. chipTAN).

I just wanted to show my humble point of view on the matter, why it is safer at times to use SDA, instead of Steamguard - because the Mobile App is bound to an OS, that is doomed to not receive updates anymore eventually, based on how Phone policy and marketing currently work, which will force you to spend money for a more recent phone to receive security updates again. And at the same time, of course I won't try to convince the Dev to continue SDA, if they don't want to/don't have time anymore.
