WebIO and Julia 1.8.3 widget issue

When I try to add a slider to a plot using Julia-1.8.3 in Jupyterlab (either on OSX or Jupyterhub on Linux),
the sliders render and the numerical values update, but they do not affect the plot as they should unless:
a) I refresh the browser window, and
b) re-run the plot cell.
Has anyone seen the same behavior? Is there a fix?
