Data Assimiliation Visualization Wish List

@guoqing-noaa sent us his wish list, so I’m copying it here in case anyone wants to add to it. (Thanks, @guoqing-noaa!)

• GDAS data assimilation monitoring site
• Convectional data monitoring
• Minimization Statistics

1. Conventional observation distribution map: show observations, mapped background, mapped analysis and the differences between observation and observation (O-B), observation and analysis (O-A), between analysis and background (analysis increment).
   • select predefined subdomains
   • zoom in, zoom out
   • filter by different data types or overlay them
   • filter by assimilated, rejected, monitored observations
   • filter by time level
   • filter by variables (T, Q, UV, P -- Temperature, Moisture, Wind, Pressure)
   • filter by vertical levels
   • filter by observation providers (such as different Mesonet networks)
   • overlay with background/analysis/difference fields
   • (The above filters may also apply to other types of plots)
2. Multiple panels showing background, analysis, difference and observations at the same page. If one panel is zoomed in/out, the other panels change accordingly. Clicking on the figure will show the field value and other related information at the cursor location.
3. observation counts (assimilated, monitored, rejected), histograms, time series
4. background, analysis and differences plots. Both horizontal and vertical. Can further customize figures based on filters mentioned in (1).
5. Interim data assimilation products, like Temperature Tendency (TTEN) before being applied, proxy reflectivity converted from lightning, processed NASA LaRC cloud products before ingestion by cloud analysis.
6. Display key parameters used by GSI/cloud analysis. For example, GSI and other name lists on a website
7. Radar reflectivity observations, background and analysis.
8. Lightning observations and simulated lightning from background and analysis
9. Radiance monitoring
10. Print version of figures or aiding the generation of high quality print versions of figures for potential reports/publications
