Loading screens not always working properly

On my VirtualBox machine, when opening a file, there is a noticeable delay, but the loading screen does not appear until the file has finished loading, when it briefly flashes.

We should look into ways to make sure the browser has priority for long enough to actually display a loading screen, before any heavy computation takes place.

As an aside, a loading screen on the login page doesn't really look good and should be unnecessary...
