@Sin-Shadow-Fox, there's some explanation at Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable latest supported downloads. The page says "Many applications built using Microsoft C and C++ tools require these libraries"; the .NET Runtime is built for Windows using those tools. |

While I get what your saying, I don't understand how that explains the comment I linked to. It sounds like someone managed to get .net 8 to run on windows 7 and I'd really like to figure out how. |

Neither am I but I can't exactly ask either of them how things went as dotnet locked that whole thread and limited conversation to collaborators and I don't have the permission to re-open it (or know how to become a collaborator). |

.NET 8 is unsupported on Windows 7. .NET 8 is not actively blocked from running on Windows 7. Some .NET 8 apps will run on Windows 7, some .NET 8 apps are not going to run. YMMV. |

Yes, they got it working for their app by installing the vc_redist. The comment is very clear about that. I tried to explain why it may not be sufficient for the app that you are trying to run.

The general consideration is that there are no guarantees here. What works for one app may not work for another. Officially Windows 7 is an unsupported environment (having gone out of mainstream support 9.5 years ago and out of extended support 1.5 years ago), so exactly what is required to get any given app working is going to be application specific. It may be as simple as installing an appropriate VC++ runtime redistributable, it may not ever work due to executing some code path that assumes a supported OS (such as Windows 10) is being run against and using an API that only exists on the such supported OS. Your mileage may vary and there isn't going to be one quick fix or general purpose solution. The proper thing to do is to move forward to a supported OS version, which will ensure you don't hit such issues in the first place. -- This is particularly prevalent given that Windows 7 is no longer getting updates and thus you may be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-7-support-ended-on-january-14-2020-b75d4580-2cc7-895a-2c9c-1466d9a53962) |

Hence the need for assistance.
As the only real option for updating OSs is Linux, I'm not fond of this idea as Linux is a very teck savvy OS that requires a lot of technical expertise and knowledge. Besides, usually when i hit a road block, the problem is fixable and doesn't require something as drastic as changing OSs.
Actually this is just propaganda by microsoft to force people off windows 7 because windows 7 does not incorporate microsoft's close system (kinda why a lot of us are staying on it, well that and it works a lot better than 10/11). Windows 7 is no more vulnerable than 10/11, this has already been proven. Please do not believe everything you read online, especially if it's from micrososft. |
