Now they must be str, it would be nice if https://docs.python.org/3/library/os.html#os.PathLike type could be used then a str or https://docs.python.org/3/library/pathlib.html#pathlib.PurePath would be allowed.

Then the calling code no longer has to perform casting like str(work_dir).
