I've been seriously contemplating building a more robust notification system than what we currently have. I know HSAR is working on email notifications for 'quels, but ultimately I'd like to build something that allows users to know when they've been followed, when people they're friends with write new things, when challenges end (and winners are picked), etc. and to be able to choose between dynamic notifications on the site and email notifications (or both). We already have the activity log, so I'm thinking we can probably build off that and ramp it up so that users can have as granular a notification experience as they'd like. Thoughts?

Regarding the actual subject of the issue, I think the feature is difficult to design elegantly - from a UI/UX standpoint. I think it risks being impenetrable to the casual user. However, I would like to be proved wrong!
