Live Migrations is part of the larger initiative to reduce downtime during feature version upgrades. Time consuming database migrations will be run before the upgrade instead of during the upgrade. As a result, downtime during upgrades will be reduced.

Expected Outcome

Customers on supported versions will be able to use the live migrations orchestrator to slash off downtime by about 30% to 40%. We hope this will help further motivate GHES customers to upgrade on a regular cadence, take advantage of new versions, and help reduce the maintenance burden of unsupported versions.
