Hibernate Transactional Exceptions Being Eaten

I'm at a bit of a loss for how to solve this.

Given This Service Class

@Service
@AllArgsConstructor
public class SomeService {
  private final SomeRepository repository;
  
  public String saveSomething(String thingToSave) {
    try {
      return this.repository.save(thingToSave);
     catch (DataIntegrityViolationException e) {
        // do something and throw modified exception
     }
   }

Everything works as expected as soon as we add @Transactional to the method it seems that n.g.e.SimpleDataFetcherExceptionHandler takes over before the catch block ever occurs.

Anyway to avoid this behavior?
