Received in private email:

Hi Chad,

I hope this e-mail finds you well. I know your time is valuable so I'll cut straight to the chase: I am looking for a small group of affiliates to promote Triplebyte and I think Gratipay is an obvious fit to work with because of your laser-focused audience of open source developers. Triplebyte is making the world a better place for software engineers (I'm a full-stack Django developer myself!) by making it possible for talented engineers to skip resume and recruiter screens while applying for multiple top tech companies at once with a single common online quiz and technical interview.

If you refer a software engineer who goes through Triplebyte's centralized technical quiz/interview process and gets a job at any company on our platform (now including Apple, Facebook, Dropbox, Stripe, Instacart, Mixpanel, and about 150 others), we'll give the referring site owner $1,500 per person.

That is a big dollar amount. I truly believe we can become one of the largest supporters of open source projects without individuals having to contribute a penny.

If it helps: I've skimmed your github issues for applying to YC S17 and W17 and watched your application video. Triplebyte a YC S15 company. We have a hardcoded permanent link from the top of https://news.ycombinator.com/jobs on HN. Our three founders Harj, Ammon, and Guillaume are each second-time YC founders. Additionally, myself and two other engineers here are also YC founders, having left our own various startups to join this one. I personally just finished mentoring a bunch of startups as an advisor for YC Startup School. I'm reaching out because I think there's a big opportunity here if we connect the dots correctly.

If this interests you, let's set up a quick Google Hangout and we can talk about how best to work together. I have ideas that would help us get started. I think we could do it in a way that was really benevolent and win-win to show that we're helping support your work, support the work of individual open source projects, AND offer a truly valuable service to engineers at the same time.

Thank you and have a good day.

(P.S. If you're curious, I'd also encourage you or someone on your team to take our online ~30 min multiple-choice coding quiz. I think you'll be really impressed by the quality of the questions, in that they're neither insulting to your intelligence nor useless trivia, and find that it makes a really good first-pass talent screen overall. If you're not impressed with what we're doing here, don't promote our service.)

My first instinct is to be like psssht whatever, ... but on second thought maybe we should be less standoffish?

I suggested some times for a call after I get back home in August.

Okay! Call wrapped. 51 minutes. 👍

Two basic brainstorms:

  1. Dedicated affiliate links for each project on Gratipay, proceeds go to the project. Requires engineering from us, but resolves distribution question.
  2. Global affiliate link. No engineering required, but creates a distribution question. Maybe the developer who got the job through Triplebyte gets the money to spend on Gratipay?

I've created an account on Triplebyte using my GitHub account, and @compumike has set me up with affiliate access. We have a link! 😱

I really like the idea of giving successful candidates the money to spend on Gratipay.

@compumike It might be easier for you to disburse to us per your existing mechanisms and we would then allocate to the developer's Gratipay account. What's the payout mechanism for the affiliate program? How do we receive the funds?

The developer would obvs need a Gratipay account, and we would need a way to authenticate that they were the ones the money should go to. Probably manual email confirmation is enough to start with until we have any sense of scale.

We'd probably also need some fallback in cases where candidates don't act. I guess it just stays with Gratipay at that point?

at that point

7 days? 14? 30?

Something like:

Congrats on the new job Triplebyte helped you land at Apple! Since you originally signed up for Triplebyte through a Gratipay affiliate link (thank you!), we'd like to offer you our full commission—$1,500—to pay your favorite open source projects on Gratipay! Think of it as a signing bonus for the open source community. :)

[[   Claim $1,500 bonus   ]]

P.S. If you don't claim this offer within 14 days, the money will go towards Gratipay operations, with our gratitude. :)

Two basic brainstorms:

(1) is better value to Triplebyte, creates more incentive for link sharing with each project since they'd get the full kick-back directly. To implement we'd need an API from Triplebyte for link generation, and then I guess we put a "Settings" tab on projects with a "Triplebyte Affiliate Link" similar to how we do "API Credentials" currently for ~users.

Once opted-in per-project we could even surface on public project profiles. Raises the possibility of 0 → 1 → ∞ for affiliate programs(!).
