Thanks for reporting this. Unfortunately I'm not able to reproduce it. I tested it on Arch Linux and on Ubuntu and on both systems scrot supports the -z option. A google search revealed this issue on another project that appears to be about the same problem, and the solution apparently was simply updating scrot. Can you check your version of scrot?
