These are my answers to questions that I'll ask in our first 1:1, and should be read as if my manager were asking them of me. They were derived from Lara Hogan's article on the topic.
What makes you grumpy?
Lack of trust. Repeated conversations/meetings.
How will I know when you're grumpy?
I'll very likely tell you if something is up!
How can I help you when you're grumpy?
Similar to symptoms of burn out it's likely if I'm grumpy about something it's due to a perceived lack of control over it. Taking an action item to set something in motion that aims to improve or fix what I'm grumpy about, even/especially if it's a task I'm responsible for, is a step in the right direction.
How do you like feedback, the medium (Slack, email, in person, etc.)
Preferably in person for significant and/or career development related feedback. Slack is a great alternative for quick snippets. Use your best judgement.
How do you like feedback, routine like in 1:1s, or as-it-happens
1:1's are a great place for "trending" feedback, or things that happen on a recurring basis. As-it-happens can also be 1:1, but Slack is acceptable for quick snippets. Use your best judgement.
How do you prefer to receive recognition? (public or private)
Public. It feels good. Private is better for constructive feedback.
What makes 1:1s the most valuable for you?
Anything but status/project updates. I enjoy talking through challenges we're both having as you should be able to help with mine and I can learn from yours.
What are your goals for this year? And for the next 3 months?
I'm working on looking further ahead on topics such as infrastructure/tooling roadmaps, team efficiency and throughput predictability, and growing world-class teams.
What do you need from your manager?
Feedback, feedback, feedback. Someone to be a sounding board for ideas and potential solutions to problems. Preferably (not required) a mentor who has previously walked a similar path to what I'm walking.
From your team?
Communication, early and often. We can't head off problems together if I don't know about them.
From your peers? (outside the team)
A network to lean on and learn from.
