Native select menu in navbar

I want to open a native select menu by clicking a navbar item. But I have not found a simple way to do this like in the example from the docs for a select menu in a fieldcontain ( http://jquerymobile.com/demos/1.0rc1/docs/forms/selects/ ).
So I'm working this around by adding a select element on pagebeforeshow to the navbar. It would be nice to have an easier way to add a select menu to a navbar.
