I'm following the instructions on https://medium.com/@paramaggarwal/converting-an-stm32f103-board-to-a-black-magic-probe-c013cf2cc38c to use stm32loader to flash the blackmagic firmware onto Blue Pill boards.

I have tried four separate boards, ordered on two different occasions.

The error I get is most often:

Is there any further investigation I can do?

I can fix it for one occasion with a mass-erase: st-flash erase.

This could be caused by bad cabling, power instability or shady hardware (blue pill or uart adapter).
It's definitely not an issue in the flash tool.

Things you can try:

  • lower the baud rate, perhaps even to 9600 (I'd start with this)
  • replace all your cables and connectors
  • change the way your UART adapter is being powered (e.g. 5V instead of 3.3V, or power pill from adapter instead of the other way around, or use an external PSU with grounds connected)
  • change the way your blue pill is powered
  • try a different brand of boards (assuming you're using cheap Chinese blue pills)
