I appreciate this has been discussed before but it doesn't seem as if it's fixed. Unfortunately I can't just change the way I comment because I don't control the schema

Yea, this is apparently a new way for having comments in SDL which allows for multiline more easily. There is a more information in graphql/graphql-spec#327 and graphql/graphql-spec#90 (comment)
