Ho - thank you for your amazing work and for sharing it with the community

I'm trying to program the CLPD with the supplied .jed file

The only lattice software that supports ispMACH 4000ze is ispLEVER - ISP lever used to be free, but has recently been moved to enterprise only paid licence.

Is there an alternative toolchain that can program the CPLD with the .jed?

Or alternatively would it be possible to generate a .svf so the CPLD can be programmed with (eg) openOCD instead?

Hey. There has to be a competition between programmable logic vendors to have the most stupid and detestable software licensing practises...

I just added the svf file for the latest bistream.
If that doesn't work, there's a copy of ispLever on archive.org that you can run in a Windows XP VM with a system date set to 2015.
