The resources for this week are really great! They actually help you dive deep into the Copilot and Generative AI theme, which I'm interested at 😅 Lemme see if I can add on that! Here's my thoughts about the first (and half) domain for Copilot Certification!

Week One: Breakdown

Domain 1: Responsible Al 7%

Explain responsible usage of Al

• Explain the limitations of using generative Al tools (dept of the source data for the model, bias in the data, etc.)

  Unfortunately, generative AI tools have limitations when it comes to content generation, and Copilot is not different. In the end, generative AI use complex probabilistic algorithms to organize text in a way that makes sense. This probability is affected by training data set of the AI or, in the case of Copilot, a large body of open source code. So its eficience reflects the languages and programming practices that are more common in the training set.

• Describe the risks associated with using Al

  Associated with AI limitations, the risks include biased decision-making (like replicating poor coding style from the training set) and privacy violations, like straight up using someone else's code (The odds are low, but never zero 😬)

• Identify the potential harms of generative Al (bias, secure code, fairness, privacy, transparency)

  Alongside the risks and the limitations, the potential harms of generative AI come from unrestricted use and unrestricted training. Biases from training sets could affect the fairness and inclusiveness of the solution. The collect of training data also could violate privacy and security.

• Explain the need to validate the output of Al tools

  Because of its limitations and risks, that could even extend to security risks (like exposing sensitive information), it is important to review the code written by Copilot. This way, you can assure it doesn't create more problems instead of fixing them, and the code follows the guides and norms for your project only.

• Explain how to mitigate the occurrence of potential harms

  It is a two end efforts. From the AI providers, responsible for training the models and collecting data, to balance the training sets to reduce biases and asserts transparency. And from the AI users, to always review the output of AI tools and not use it indiscriminately.

• Explain ethical Al

  I understand Ethical AI by the principles of responsible AI by Microsoft. The application of AI algorithms following a guideline that focuses on the possible outcomes from using that application. You know there's risks, you know there's misunderstanding of the capabilites of AI, so as an AI developer, it is important to attend to these principles to avoid and mitigate problems.

• Identify how to operate a responsible Al

  I believe the operation of a responsible AI aligns with being aware of its limitations, the risks associated, and the real benefits you can take from it. In the end, AI is another tool to improve productivity and _support_ developers in their job. If you have those points clear in your use, you understand the best use cases from AI and you review the code generated from AI, you are using it responsibly (is that a word?)

Domain 2: GitHub Copilot Plans and features 31%

Part 1

Identify the different GitHub Copilot plans

• Understand the differences between Copilot Individual, Copilot Business, Copilot Enterprise, and Copilot Business for non-GHE

  They have incremental features as the plans are upgraded. Copilot Indivual covers the needs of an individual (thus the name), with integration in the coding environment. Copilot Business goes further, allowing companies and organizations to configure how they want Copilot to work, like policy management. And Copilot Enterprise integrates not only in the coding environment, but in the GitHub.com too, improving the whole development ecosystem, from planning to deploy.

• Define GitHub Copilot in the IDE

  A Bless 🕊️ (just kidding 🤣). Like the name suggests, it is an AI assistence when writing code in the IDE, providing autocompletions and helping with problem solving. It helps to write code faster and "smarter"

• Define GitHub Copilot Chat in the IDE

  The Copilot Chat is a ChatGPT like interface integrated in the code editor, using the Copilot plugin. It can take context from the workspace and provide answers and solutions based on the user questions. (It's pretty useful since you don't need to leave the IDE to ask your questions!)

• Describe the different ways to trigger GitHub Copilot (chat, inline chat, suggestions, multiple suggestions, exception handling, CLI)

  There are many ways to trigger Copilot. You can use ctrl+shift+P to open the command pallete or crtl+I to open the inline chat in your IDE, note that with the command pallete or the inline chat, you can ask Copilot to generate code, explain code, help fixing error or even writing documentation. You can also open the IDE chat (how to open depends on the IDE). In the editor, if you write comments with prompts for Copilot, it will also trigger it.

• I really enjoyed the chapter about Theory Building and cognitive load in the blog! It's a very interesting take on the development process and the role of the programmer.
• It's been over a year since I got my Copilot license, and I have to say it is really amazing 😅 sometimes it looks like it is reading my mind! Of course it makes some mistakes.. and that's why you need to review the code generated by Copilot, but I really recommend the experience for all developers.
