Creating SVGs through standalone and tikz is a nice workflow, supported e.g. by dvilualatex | dvisvgm.

Note: Since two tools need to be run (and configured), this engine is probably a non-trivial upgrade over the existing ones. An alternative would be to make dvi_tex the engine and dvisvgm an extension to be run as a post-processor.
