All mdbook books look pretty much alike; and to make matters worse the book title is understated, at least in the default theme. I'd like to be able to add a graphic to the top of the table of contents, to visually distinguish one mdbook from another.

I suppose I could. But I haven't looked at either the mdbook code or the generated HTML/JavaScript.

+1 would be a cool addition.

This is possible by editing index.hbs or your stylesheets, right?

Would it be possible to do this via modifying the theme instead? For a project of mine, we're working on making it easy to modify the theme with a much stronger theme engine: google/mdbook-i18n-helpers#70.
