Upgrade from 5.x to 6.x

Can anyone advise best way to go from Snipe 5.x to 6.x? I've updated my PHP to 8, which I think isn't supported by Snipe 5.x. Do I need to go back to PHP 7, update Snipe, then update PHP back to 8.1?

I tried doing it as the docs say, and it went bananas. I'm guessing that's because the 5.x update script can't work with PHP 8.1?

I did some searching on t'internet, and saw mention of installing afresh and copying over the config. Is that the best way to do it?
