Assigment best pratice

I'm trying to understand how to assign assets, I mean, a printer or a router are not assigned to a specific user, they are related to the department or the site. So, what do you do usually, assign them to a location?
So, create Company Demo, then Department A, Department B, Server Room, etc and assign assets to them?

And what about relationships between asset? For example, a router is assigned to the Server Room, the firewall is physically linked to the router, better to assign it to the router or again to the server room?

I'd like to have some ideas/opinions about this topic. Thanks.
