I am trying to use this with evil mode, and it seems to work for most things, but when I push o to insert a new line, in that specific case the auto-indent still seems to use spaces.

Ah, seems I've fixed using haskell/haskell-mode#1265 (comment) plus

(with-eval-after-load "haskell-mode"
  (evil-define-key 'normal haskell-mode-map "o" 'hly/evil-open-below)
  (evil-define-key 'normal haskell-mode-map "O" 'hly/evil-open-above))
