Describe the feature and the current behavior/state

I am not sure whether the features I am requesting are already available. However, it would be great if Tex Studio could incorporate these in the future release:

  • A versioning feature that allows users to create document versions either locally (limited number of versions, configurable) or connected to a GitHub repository, with the ability to sync them. In addition to version control, a navigation feature that enables users to select relevant versions or compare two versions side by side would be a great addition. Currently, without versioning, managing a document with hundreds of pages, such as a scientific review report, becomes quite challenging. When revisions are made based on reviewer comments, it becomes difficult to track which paragraphs or sections have been changed, particularly when small changes, such as altering individual words, affect many parts of the document. Instead of re-reading the entire document, this feature could highlight the changes during the PDF preview, making it easier to evaluate what has been modified in the new version compared to the previous one. Manually coloring text using tags, such as \textcolor{<color>}{<text>} is cumbersome, especially when changes are spread throughout the document, and would require the removal of color annotations before sending the document back to the reviewer.
  • It would be beneficial if the highlighted colors could also be made permanent for a version, as it is common to create documents with changes highlighted in specific colors.
  • It would be helpful if the text in the PDF preview could be selectable and copyable. Currently, to copy text, one must open the actual PDF file created by TeX Studio, as the viewer only allows zooming by default and does not support text selection or copying.

Thank you.

  1. txs supports svn and git, see manual (https://texstudio-org.github.io/advanced.html#git-svn-support)
  2. anything related pdf output needs to be in the tex file. txs shows diffs on text level only.
There is no direct way to make a pdf out of this information
  3. pdf output does necessarily give something meaningful for tex
