Documentation for Engineers

Audience

Engineers are building IoT products for work or just for fun. Engineers are interested in the technology behind The Things Network and do not shy away from technical details. Although many technical disciplines are required to successfully launch an IoT product, Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineers most closely work with The Things Network.

What can TTN do for me as an engineer?

The Things Network offers an ultra low-power, long-range, ISM-band wireless solution for IoT products. Based on the LoRaWAN standard (in turn based on Semtech's spread-spectrum LoRa modulation), The Things Network is an ideal backhaul solution for low data rate applications. More generally, experience with Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) is a highly sought after skill. Even if you do not launch a product on TTN, getting hands-on experience with TTN and LoRaWAN can help you break into the world of LPWANs and IoT.

How to Get Involved

As an engineer, here's a few things you can do to contribute:

  1. Read about how to Get Started with Node Development.
  2. Download a copy of the LoRaWAN Specification for technical details on the wireless component of the network.
  3. Join the TTN NYC Meetup Group or a group in your area.
  4. Use our Application Worksheet to see if TTN could work for your project.
  5. Tell People about TTN, especially with colleagues and at trade shows.
  6. Contribute to reference implementations, and consider open-sourcing your projects whenever possible.
  7. Write and share your IoT/LPWAN/LoRaWAN/TTN-related whitepapers by tweeting to @thethingsnyc or via email to [[[email protected]]].
