We've discussed a couple of options here. For now, though, we'll take the simplest approach and make the ESC key clear the current "hit." Since this is completely not obvious (and frankly, so is the whole interaction once on mouse down) we'll also add some helpful instruction text that shows up the first time you mouse down.
