Hello! 👋 Editor here, answering the "Needs Copy Review" ping. Just a couple suggestions for the copy: Title: Welcome to the Zoom Out view Suggestion: Welcome to Zoom Out view Main copy: The Zoom Out view simplifies your editing experience by allowing you to create and edit at the pattern level rather than focusing on individual blocks. Suggestion: Zoom Out view allows you to create and edit at the pattern level rather than focus on individual blocks. |
@kristastevens Thanks for the suggestion! I've updated it based on your suggestion. |
I'm not confident this is a necessary notice. These notices, more often than not, get dismissed without a second glance. The template editor is in the same boat. I'd rather not add just another one without finding some way to educate the user that is much more connective—not just a modal you read. |
It's also a zoom state, rather than a "view" that requires a name. I think of it as the same sort of control as a zoom in/out within any other application. The only addition this control has is that your selection value grows (pattern-level rather than block-level). For example, when I'm communicating to users, I say "Select this here to zoom out", not "Here's the Zoom Out view". |
I think the problem is that there's no way for users to know about this change in advance unless they actually try it out. Are there any other approaches to address this issue? |
I too think the welcome guide is likely not the best way to inform about this addition - seems like a too big tool. We don't have a history of introducing new features in any way - I remember folks calling for a tour guide component that could be scripted to highlight new things ;). Perhaps a better endeavor is to figure out the root issue: how do users keep up to date? Apple and Microsoft show a repeating notification detailing what's new and also some did you know notifications. We still don't have notifications. Other systems have a tour component that is reused to show what's new directly in the UI. Maybe it's time for this discussion? |
Thank you everyone for your feedback.
I'm imagining something like this, is that correct?
This wasn't accurate. Once a major update is complete, What's New page will appear and the zoom out mode will be highlighted there. However, I suspect that few users will read the entire page 😅 |
@t-hamano yes by tour component I mean something like what you show in the image. |
We might need to discuss the ideal solution a bit more in #65856, so I'll close this PR for now. Thank you for all your feedback! |
Partially resolves #65856
What?
This PR adds a welcome guide to let users know what the zoom out mode introduced in WP 6.7 means.
Note
The image has not been created yet, so it's reused from other welcome guides. If it makes sense to move forward with this PR, I would appreciate your help in creating the images.
Why?
Zoom out mode is a new feature coming to WP 6.7. However, with just a button labeled "Zoom out," it's hard for users to understand what this mode does.
We've often shown welcome guides for new/important features. Below are screenshots of all the welcome guides:
Block Editor
Template Editor
Site Editor
Global Styles
Widget Editor
Pages Screen
How?
Show a welcome guide when the user enters zoom out mode for the first time.
