Convert a colocated repo into a non-colocated repo

There are instructions how to convert a repo to a colocated repo. I'd like to do the reverse: convert a colocated repo into a non-colocated. I tried moving .git to .jj/repo/store/git and adjusting git_target, but that didn't work. Any guidance on how to do this correctly?

Did you make it bare? I think that's git config set core.bare true.

Did you accidentally add a newline in the git_target file? I don't think we would print a newline between 1: ... and 2: ... otherwise.

I'm slightly puzzled. Vim shows git_target with only one line that has git on it, no newline at the end.

wc .jj/repo/store/git_target
       1       1       4 .jj/repo/store/git_target

This also shows one line, but I don't understand what the fourth character is, the contents of the file are just git.

And hexdump shows that there is a 0a hiding in there. How did it get there and how do I get it out?

I just did it from Python, and it has indeed fixed the problem. Many thanks for your help!
