N.B. i am using the setup as described in https://www.mobilefish.com/images/developer/raspberry_pi3_model_b_dragino_shield_wiring_large.jpg with the addition of a connection from Raspberry 3.3V to 3V3 on the Dragino shield. The board 1.2 and newer don't create that voltage internally any more. I am entertaining a 1.4 board.

@caveman99

i was looking at the possible potential use of dln2 (https://github.com/notro/pico-usb-io-board) again

the dln2 is detected via gpiod just with a different name (chip id)

$ gpiodetect
gpiochip0 [pinctrl-bcm2711] (58 lines)
gpiochip1 [raspberrypi-exp-gpio] (8 lines)
gpiochip2 [dln2] (29 lines)

so in my case on my pc it is gpiochip(1) and this sample works fine (as example)

root@uD3H:/home/user# gpiodetect
gpiochip0 [INT3451:00] (203 lines)
gpiochip1 [dln2] (29 lines)

blinks the LED on the Pico Board (25)
https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/gpio-on-raspberry-pi#3-basic-gpio-example

I have not yet built on the Raspberry Pi
