are these newline escapes not needed for single-quoted strings? i thought only double-quoted strings could have unescaped newlines.

SC1004: You don't break lines with \ in single quotes, it results in literal backslash-linefeed.
Same as what I know.

If you print $COMMANDS out, you'll see:
\ help install uninstall use run exec \ alias unalias reinstall-packages \ current list ls list-remote ls-remote \ clear-cache deactivate unload \ version which
