Trapeze - AMQP Web Routing

Trapeze provides the ability to use your AMQP message queuing infrastructure as a web router and load balancer. This provides a number of abilities:

* Instant load-balancing
* Dynamic routing changes

Installation

Trapeze installs as a RabbitMQ plugin. Before setting up Trapeze, you’ll need a working RabbitMQ development environment. Setting this up is described at www.rabbitmq.com/plugin-development.html#getting-started. Briefly, the process involves:

* hg clone http://hg.rabbitmq.com/rabbitmq-public-umbrella
* cd rabbitmq-public-umbrella
* make co
* make

Once this environment is functional, checkout Trapeze into the umbrella. Assuming that your current working directory is rabbitmq-public-umbrella:

* git clone git://github.com/paulj/trapeze.git
* cd trapeze
* make

Trapeze can now be run in place by executing:

make run

Trying it out

Assuming that you have a default configuration for RabbitMQ’s Mochiweb support (eg, you just checked it out as part of the above steps), Trapeze will be listening on localhost:55672. Visiting this URL should result in a 404, since Trapeze currently doesn’t have anything to route to!

To make Trapeze route to an application, you’ll need to create a basic application, and run it with a Trapeze-aware handler that understands how to tell Trapeze to route requests to it. Currently, the only handler that can do this is github.com/paulj/trapeze-rb, which provides a Ruby Rack handler for making Rack-aware Ruby applications participate in Trapeze routing. An example of using this would be:

* git clone git://github.com/paulj/trapeze-rb.git
* cd trapeze-rb
* rake build
* sudo gem install pkg/trapeze-0.1.0.gem
* cd samples
* trapezerb -R config.ru start

Following these steps should result in seeing everybody’s favourite phrase - “Hello World”. At this point, Trapeze would appear to be making something fairly simple (making the webapp browseable) much harder than it needs to be. To show off the actual purpose of Trapeze, you’ll need to run more than one application. For your first application, stop the current trapezerb instance, and instead run it as:

trapezerb -R config.ru -k "*.localhost.*./.#" -n app1 start

In a second terminal, change to the trapeze-rb/samples directory again, and execute:

trapezerb -R config2.ru -k "*.127.0.0.1.*./.#" -n app2 start

In your web browser, if you visit localhost:55672, then you should see “Hello World”. If you visit 127.0.0.1:55672, you should see “Hello Different World”. Trapeze is routing to two different applications, based upon the keys (-k) they provide when they connect. For more details on how to express these keys, see the “Routing Keys” section of this document.

Note also that each invocation includes a “-n” parameter. This parameter indicates an application name. If two consumers indicate the same application name, then Trapeze will round-robin requests to them. This allows you to bring up multiple instances of your application (potentially on multiple machines), and have the requests balanced between them. To see this in action, try starting both config.ru and config2.ru with no routing key (ie, accept anything), and the same app name:

trapezerb -R config.ru -n app1 start
  (And in another terminal)
trapezerb -R config.ru -n app2 start

Requests should alternate between “Hello World” and “Hello Different World” over a series of refreshes.

Routing Keys

Trapeze utilises AMQP routing keys in order to find the appropriate application to route a request to. Each requests verb/host/port/path combination is transformed into a routing key that looks like:

<verb>.<host parts>.<port>./.<path parts>

For example, a request to localhost:55672 would be transformed into:

get.localhost.55672./

A request to 127.0.0.1:55672/some/path/file.html would be transformed into:

get.127.0.0.1.55672./.some.path.file.html

Note that the domain and path portions are split by periods. This allows standard AMQP topic-routing to be applied. AMQP topic routing provides a facility to subscribe to topics using routing keys that follow a syntax allowing for sections to be either marked as wildcards or requiring a specific value. The syntax is:

* A * indicates that any value is acceptable for this element of the key
* A # indicates that any number of period separated values can be accepted
* A textual value indicates that an exact match is required

Examples of matching might be:

* To subscribe to anything sent to http://localhost:55672, use "*.localhost.55672./.#". The verb is considered a wildcard, and any number of path parameters are considered acceptable;
* To subscribe to example.com and any sub-domain, use "*.#.example.com.*./.#". The verb is considered a wildcard, and any number (including 0) domain parts can precede example.com. Any number of path parameters are acceptable.
