How to export design systems (libraries)

Exporting a Figma file connected to a library

When exporting a Figma file that is connected to a library and importing it into Penpot, the instances that references components from the library will be added as orphan instances to the Penpot file. Therefore, we recommend exporting your libraries, publishing them as shared libraries, and adding them to the related files in Penpot to continue using assets from the library.

The color and text styles from the library will also be available in the file. However, variables will not be saved as this feature is currently not available in Penpot, though their values will still be visible.

Exporting a library

When exporting a library, the file will retain its page structure, components, variants (displayed as main components) and local styles (colors and texts). Although variables will not be saved, their values will still be visible in Penpot.

To use the file as a shared library in Penpot, follow these steps:

  1. Select “Assets” in the tab bar on the left side of the canvas.
  2. Select “Libraries” and publish the file as a library.

For more information, visit Penpot's help center to learn more about shared libraries. Once published, you can use it as a design system for other Penpot files 😊
