kubectl apply is arbitrary code execution as your user on a cluster. As such, the urls should not be trivially MITM-able to malicious code on. e.g. coffee shop wifi.

We should find a solution for serving the short links over https.

For the watchers on this issue, we're working on getting the redirector service upgraded to support https. I'm tentatively marking this for 0.2 although, because of the multiple people involved in coordinating this change, it may arrive before or after 0.2.
