Rider_app

Follow the steps to create a ride sharing app both for the passenger and driver.

PART 0 - Prerequisites

STEP 1: Download android studio and make sure you have the right tools needed as mentioned below: Alt text

Alt text

STEP 2: Installing dependencies

WINDOWS USER:
a. Open an Administrator Command Prompt (right click Command Prompt and select "Run as Administrator"), then run the following command:

choco install -y nodejs.install python2 jdk8

b. Install the React Native command line interface:

npm install -g react-native-cli

MAC OS USERS:
a. Run the following commands in a Terminal after installing Homebrew:

brew install node
brew install watchman

b. Install the React Native command line interface:

npm install -g react-native-cli

c. React Native requires a recent version of the Java SE Development Kit (JDK). Download and install JDK 8 or newer if needed. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

STEP 3: Install git. Follow the steps here: https://gist.github.com/derhuerst/1b15ff4652a867391f03

PART 1 - Creating the driver side app

STEP 1: Setting up the environment:
a. To create the folder for the app, run the command in the terminal:

react-native init driver

b. Installing the nescessary dependencies:

npm install --save pusher-js react-native-maps react-native-geocoding
react-native link react-native-maps

STEP 2: Create a Google project, get an API key from the a Google developer console, and enable the Google Maps Android API, Google Maps Geocoding API, Google Places for Android API.

a. Open the android\app\src\main\AndroidManifest.xml file in your project directory. Under the tag, add a containing the API key.

<application>
    <meta-data
      android:name="com.google.android.geo.API_KEY"
      android:value="YOUR GOOGLE SERVER API KEY"/>
</application>

STEP 3: Add the permissions in the same file above the :

    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE"/>
    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />

STEP 4: Ensure the android studio sdk version is 23:

 <uses-sdk
           android:minSdkVersion="16"
           android:targetSdkVersion="23" />

STEP 5: Start by opening the index.js file and replace the default code with the following:

import { AppRegistry } from 'react-native';
    import App from './App';
    AppRegistry.registerComponent('driver', () => App);

STEP 6: Copy the App.js file from the Driver folder and replace with the existing one (make sure to change the google maps API key). Copy the helper.js file to the driver folder.

STEP 7: Run the app using:

react-native run-android

SOLUTIONS - TO SOME ERRORS THAT MIGHT OCCUR

  1. remove @override from C:\Users\The Assembly\passenger\node_modules\react-native-google-place-picker\android\src\main\java\com\reactlibrary\RNGooglePlacePickerPackage.java:20: --> remove the @override from the package and module file at line 20

  2. Could not find or load main class org.gradle.wrapper.GradleWrapperMain react native - replace android/gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.jar file /java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: com.android.ide.common.process.ProcessException: - replace resources file in android

  3. Set JAVA_HOME to jdk path for environment variables http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

  4. Set ANDROID_HOME to android sdk path (get from the sdk manager)

  5. Could not delete path.. - cd android && ./gradlew clean or just gradlew clean / looking for index.android.js : npm start -- --reset-cache and reopen the terminal if not then add the sdk_path/tools and sdk_path/platform-tools to path

  6. cannot find symbol new MapsPackage() in MainApplication --> You need to add import com.airbnb.android.react.maps.MapsPackage; to your MainApplication.java file.

PART 3 - Creating the Passenger side app

STEP 1: Go ahead and create a new app:

react-native init passenger

STEP 2: You’d also need to install the same libraries as the driver app plus a couple more. Also linking them to react native:

npm i react-native-google-places --save

react-native link react-native-google-places

npm install --save pusher-js react-native-geocoding github:geordasche/react-native-google-place-picker react-native-loading-spinner-overlay react-native-maps

react-native link react-native-maps

STEP 3: In your AndroidManifest.xml file, request location permissions and add your API key in a meta-data tag (ensure you are within the tag as follows:

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE"/>
<application
     android:name=".MainApplication"
     ...>
   <meta-data
   	android:name="com.google.android.geo.API_KEY"
   	android:value="YOUR_ANDROID_API_KEY_HERE"/>
   ...
</application>

STEP 4: open the android/app/src/main/java/com/passenger/MainApplication.java file and add the following below the last import:

import com.reactlibrary.RNGooglePlacePickerPackage;

STEP 5: Add the library that you just imported under the getPackages() function. While you’re there, also make sure that the MapsPackage() is listed as well.

protected List<ReactPackage> getPackages() {
      return Arrays.<ReactPackage>asList(
          new MainReactPackage(),
          new MapsPackage(),
          new RNGooglePlacePickerPackage() // <- add this
      );
    }

STEP 6: Next, open the android/settings.gradle file and add these right above the include ':app' directive:

include ':react-native-google-place-picker'
   project(':react-native-google-place-picker').projectDir = new File(rootProject.projectDir,         '../node_modules/react-native-google-place-picker/android')

a. While you’re there, also make sure that the resources for React Native Maps and places are also added:

include ':react-native-maps'
 project(':react-native-maps').projectDir = new File(rootProject.projectDir, '../node_modules/react-native-maps/lib/android')

 include ':react-native-google-places'
project(':react-native-google-places').projectDir = new File(rootProject.projectDir, '../node_modules/react-native-google-places/android')

STEP 7: Next, open the android/app/build.gradle file and add the following under the dependencies:

dependencies {
      compile project(':react-native-google-place-picker') // <- add this
      compile project(':react-native-google-places')// <- add this
    }

a. Lastly, make sure that React Native Maps is also compiled:

compile project(':react-native-maps')

STEP 8: Start by opening the index.js file and replace the default code with the following:

import { AppRegistry } from 'react-native';
   import App from './App';
   AppRegistry.registerComponent('passenger', () => App);

STEP 9: Copy the App.js file from the passenger folder and replace with the existing one (make sure to change the google maps API key). Copy the helper.js file to the passenger folder.

STEP 10: Go ahead and connect your Android device to your computer and run the following command:

react-native run-android

Part 4 - Setting up Genymotion

Genymotion is a multi-platform Android emulator that runs on top of VirtualBox to provide you better performance than the standard Android Virtual Device emulator and it’s free for personal use.

LINK: https://www.genymotion.com/

STEP 1: You need to make an account, and sign in to be able to download the trial version. After signing in, navigate to Downloads on top right orner of the sreen, right next to your avatar.

STEP 2: In the downloads page, scroll down to the bottom of the page and and click "get Genymotion personal version". When you get to the download page, download the version without Virtual box. It should start downloading immediately after that.

Download

STEP 3: Download oracle virtual box from here .

STEP 4: Next, right click on the Genymotion icon, and under "Run with graphic processor", select High performance (NVIDIA) processor, the name of your graphic processor varies with what you have installed on your system, in our case it's Nvidia.

STEP 5: To set up a virtual device, you need to first login to the genymotion account that you previously created. After login in, you will get an option to install your first virtual machine.

STEP 6: Select "Google Nexus 5X - 6.0.0 - API 23 - 1080 X1920" virtual machine, and wait for it to download.

STEP 7: After the virtual machine is done downloading, select the virtual machine and press start (Sometimes you might get some error while loading in the virtual machine, make sure you have the recent version of virtual box downloaded and your virtualisation is turned on. To check how to set up the virtualisation through the bios click here for windows 10).

STEP 8: Now that you have set up your virtual box, you need to install the google play services so that we could enable google maps for setting up either a driver/passanger for testing. The newer version of Genymotion already has opengapps installed, check the emulator UI in the top right corner, there is a lock icon with GAPPS written right below with a tick mark, suggesting that it is enabled. In case you have an older version, follow these instructions to install google play services:

  • Visit opengapps.org
  • Select x86 as platform.
  • Choose the Android version corresponding to your virtual device. (6.0.0 in our case)
  • Select nano as variant.
  • Download the zip file.
  • Drag & Drop the zip installer in a new Genymotion virtual device.

STEP 9: Now, you will be able to the access the map functionality through google maps. Its now time to compile the app and install it on genymotion. Make sure the virtual machine is open and on the command prompt depending on which app you want to install (driver/passanger), go to the designated directory in the command prompt. Next, type:

react-native run-android

STEP 10: Once the app runs you’ll see a blank screen. This is normal because the app needs a location in order to render something. You can do that by clicking on “GPS” located on the upper right-side of the emulator UI then enable GPS. You can also click on the map button and select a specific location if you want:

map

STEP 11: Once you’ve selected a location, the map UI in the app should show the same location that you selected.
