Many people get confused: do I need to install Eclipse? will I need to learn Java? The answer to that is simple:
- if you are a User, you don't need Eclipse, you don't need to know Java: you install and use CSS as you would any other application
- if you are a Developer, you need Eclipse and you need to know Java.
But which one are you? Find out!
Are you going to develop your own plug-ins?
- A: No. I am busy enough as it is. I just want to use what other people did (and maybe just bitch about it on the mailing list).
- B: Yes! I want to contribute my "bug-fixes" and "improvements" and write my own client rich application plug-ins!
Are you going to create a distribution for your site?
- A: No. I am just taking what you guys have, configure it, and hope for the best.
- B: Yes! I want to choose what plug-ins are available, and decide which ones are worthy of my site's attention.
If you replied B to any one question, congratulations: you are a Developer! You'll need to be a decent Java programmer and understand the Eclipse RCP - look for hints on this wiki. Get ready installing Eclipse!
If you replied A to all the questions, lucky you: you are a User! You will simply need to gather your control system expertise, download a tarball and play around with it, and maybe it will actually work for you. Get your browser ready to report bugs!
