Filename Convention

The filename convention used for our data is structured as follows:

platform_instrument_mb_substance_atmosphericmodel_microphysicalmodel_version.nc

Components of the Filename

  1. Platform: Satellite platform.

  2. Instrument: Satellite instrument.

  3. Mb:

    • m for monochromatic calculation.
    • b for band calculation weighted by the spectral response function.
  4. Substance: Composition of the particulate. Options include:

    • Liquid-water
    • Water-ice
    • Aerosol
    • Biomass
    • Volcanic-ash
    • Sulphuric-acid
  5. AtmosphericModel: Code denoting the atmospheric forward model.

    • 00: Cloud atmospheric forward model, no Rayleigh scattering.
    • 01: Cloud atmospheric forward model, includes Rayleigh scattering.
    • 1X: Aerosol atmospheric forward model. 'X' denotes the gaseous model:
      • 1 = Tropical Atmosphere
      • 2 = Midlatitude Summer
      • 3 = Midlatitude Winter
      • 4 = Subarctic Summer
      • 5 = Subarctic Winter
      • 6 = 1976 US Standard

Note: The atmospheric forward model codes aerosol, cloud, and multilevel do not constrain the choice of microphysical models. For example, you could run the cloud atmospheric forward model using the biomass microphysical model.

  6. MicrophysicalModel: A three-digit code representing particle microphysics, backwards compatible with old LUT naming (e.g., a70 for aerosol dust model).

  7. Version: LUT version.

LUT Version 2 Creation Code

The code to create these V2 Look-Up Tables (LUTs) is currently in development. We plan to add it to GitHub once it is sufficiently robust.
