This is especially important in light of the change to the Gittip homepage. When I go on the site I can't think of anyone to give to. |
The About page also needs better onboarding. Right now it says this:
But the homepage doesn't have the text "Who inspires you?" on it! I think this must be a holdover from the old design. Besides fixing the wording here, I think it needs an "or [something else]" option for those who can't think of a name right away. Maybe a link to https://www.gittip.com/for/. |

I'm concerned that the current Onboarding milestone is too technical and doesn't include addressing what is a major and connected communication/marketing issue: getting the newly onboarded users to actually engage with the site by setting up gifts. They need to be able to find someone they are excited to give to from day one.
Included in the Onboarding sequence should be some suggestions on people/teams the user could tip. Suggested gift recipients could be:
Issue #697 should be part of a larger on-boarding strategy. Think of Twitter's initial onboarding (follow 10 people to start out), or registrations that give you a progress bar that show how complete your setup is (and what you still need to do).
Any new user who signs up should be given a checklist to complete their account. That checklist should be front-and-center until it's accomplished:
