This is an ABI-breaking change, because it fixes bugs in our ABI code. I'm not sure what that means for this PR, we don't really have a process for such changes, do we? I can only hope nobody relied on the old buggy behavior.

Given that this seems to be related to being sensitive to field ordering, it is possible that in fact the bug was introduced in #115277 -- in which case this PR would restore the ABI to what it was before that PR.

EDIT: No, that guess was wrong, I verified that the ABI is already wrong on stable.
