This implements a new lint to warn about unused macro rules (arms/matchers), similar to the unused_macros lint added by #41907 that warns about entire macros.

macro_rules! unused_empty {
    (hello) => { println!("Hello, world!") };
    () => { println!("empty") }; //~ ERROR: 2nd rule of macro `unused_empty` is never used
}

fn main() {
    unused_empty!(hello);
}

Builds upon #96149 and #96156.

Fixes #73576

One rule is used to give a better compile error when an impossible condition is used: https://fxrev.dev/c/fuchsia/+/679455/1/src/lib/mundane/src/boringssl/wrapper.rs , so it being unused is expected.

I'm wondering about making the lint not fire in this instance. On one hand, it feels a bit niche/surprising behavior to me, but on the other hand, there are few "parse time" lints that could have possible interactions with compile_error!, so it's expected to be niche.

Furthermore, the very point of compile_error! is to be not expanded during a successful compilation, as in, it exists to be "unused". A direct invocation of compile_error! is easy to detect, but it could be hidden through indirection, which is quite hard to unwrangle so I think not a good idea. I think that supporting direct invocations first would be a good start.

but I would hesitate to remove the first one since if code in the future were to use it, it would result in a change in behavior rather than a compile failure (since the u8 case would fall through to the $self: ty case).

Yeah I guess in that case it's better to add an #[allow(...)]. For the different combinations of arguments use case, it probably depends on your personal taste. I lean towards removing stuff as it is still preserved in git history, but shrug.

Thanks for writing all of this up, @ComputerDruid !

As any possible changes to the lint to make it more permissive (like the ones I discussed above) won't make it into the 1.62 release, which is the first release to feature the lint, it might be a good idea to turn the lint to allow by default until they are implemented. The second advantage is that it makes the introduction easier, as in, you can avoid allowing the unknown_lints lint in more cases (depending on the Rust compiler versions you as a developer care about). I wonder what others think.

I wonder if this is more suitable for clippy. If this kind of lint has a high chance of linting something that it is not supposed to, then it might just be too annoying to be in rustc.

That's an interesting suggestion. Rust lints have a way higher standard than clippy lints, they must be almost always right and also not be opinionated. For unused code, it's already a thing that rust warns about it so from an opinionatedness point of view, the lint should be fine (although there was that case in the experience report where the arguments were in weird orders, where it's a taste based question). For being almost always right, I skimmed @ComputerDruid 's PR and almost all cases seemed like the lint improved the situation, or it was a clear case for the ? kleene operator.

Allow the unused_macro_rules lint for now

It was newly added by rust-lang#96150 with warn by default, which is great as it gave exposure to the community, and their feedback gave me ideas for improvements.

Allowing the lint is good for two reasons:

* It makes the transition easier as e.g. allow directives won't fire the unknown lint warning once it is turned to warn by default in the future. The [commit that allowed the lint in fuchsia](https://fuchsia.googlesource.com/fuchsia/+/9d8f96517c3963de2f0e25598fd36061914524cd%5E%21/) had to allow unknown lints for example.
This is especially important compared to other lints in the unused group,
because the _ prefix trick doesn't exist for macro rules, allowing is the
only option (either of unused_macro_rules, or of the entire unused group,
but that is not as informative to readers). Allowing the lint also makes it
possible to work on possible heuristics for disabling the macro in specific
cases.
* It gives time for implementing heuristics for when to suppress the lint, e.g.
when `compile_error!` is invoked by that arm (so it's only there to yield an error).

See: rust-lang#96150 (comment)

I would also like this to be backported to the 1.62 beta branch (cc rust-lang#97016).

More data:

So most of the time people are adding allows instead of removing rules. In addition to the list found through github's global commit search, I've also encountered the lint in glium. I've removed the rule there, because it never matched, not even on Rust 1.0 (although glium predates rust 1.0). It also didn't compile any more due to refactors, so I figured it was code added through development that is now not neccessary any more.

Generally I didn't expect to find so much allows compared to the small number of removals. I wonder if the lint is useful to people. On the other hand, one of the people who made the commits above added a ❤️ reaction to this PR even though they added an allow.

Allow `unused_macro_rules` in path tests

PR rust-lang#96150 adds a new lint to warn about unused macro rules (arms/matchers). This causes errors in `library/std/src/path/tests.rs` on the `x86_64-fortanix-unknown-sgx` platform. This PR fixes compilation errors on that platform by allowing unused macro rules.

Also a PR that removed unused rules instead of adding an allow.

If these rules all unconditionally expand to compile_error, could we do a "dummy expand" to detect such cases? Although it might be too expensive and unnecessarily complex.

@est31
Copy link

est31 commented May 20, 2022

@fee1-dead a dummy expand would add another entire mode to expansion which is quite an undertaking... and it's not fully known how the code block would be expanded as well, as the macro rule might take some input and the input might change whether compile_error is invoked or not.

    (@parse $($tail:tt)*) => {
        invoke_mac_if_foo!(compile_error, $($tail:tt)*)
    };

And invoke_mac_if_foo invokes the given macro if the tail passed to it matches "foo", or something, otherwise it doesn't invoke it.

Even if you "just" wanted to parse the output, you'd be in trouble because of the potential $ syntax that is not normal Rust code. Also you don't know in which context you are.

The simplest solution, the one I'd suggest, is to just scan all tokens in the rule, then look for a literal named compile_error followed by a bang. This doesn't catch a lot of stuff, doesn't work with reexports of compile_error for example. It also "matches" in the case of the compile_error macro being shadowed, which it probably shouldn't. But it's better than nothing.

Due to the highly dynamic, highly untyped nature of Rust's macros I doubt you can get something better than that.

I'd say that 99% of cases just invoke compile_error unconditionally and at the top level of the block.

Never regard macro rules with compile_error! invocations as unused

The very point of compile_error! is to never be reached, and one of
the use cases of the macro, currently also listed as examples in the
documentation of compile_error, is to create nicer errors for wrong
macro invocations. Thus, we should never warn about unused macro arms
that contain invocations of compile_error.

See also rust-lang#96150 (comment) and the discussion after that.

Furthermore, the PR also contains two commits to silence `unused_macro_rules` when a macro has an invalid rule, and to add a test that `unused_macros` does not behave badly in the same situation.

- The `git` and `registry` directories in Cargo's home directory (usually
  `~/.cargo`) are now marked as cache directories so that they are not
  included in backups or content indexing (on Windows).
- Added automatic `@` argfile support, which will use "response files" if the

Cargo
-----

- Added the `cargo add` command for adding dependencies to `Cargo.toml` from
  the command-line.
  [docs](https://doc.rust-lang.org/nightly/cargo/commands/cargo-add.html)
- Package ID specs now support `name@version` syntax in addition to the
  previous `name:version` to align with the behavior in `cargo add` and other
  tools. `cargo install` and `cargo yank` also now support this syntax so the
  version does not need to passed as a separate flag.
- The `git` and `registry` directories in Cargo's home directory (usually
  `~/.cargo`) are now marked as cache directories so that they are not
  included in backups or content indexing (on Windows).
- Added automatic `@` argfile support, which will use "response files" if the
  command-line to `rustc` exceeds the operating system's limit.

Compatibility Notes
-------------------

- `cargo test` now passes `--target` to `rustdoc` if the specified target is
  the same as the host target.

Version 1.61.0 (2022-05-19)
==========================

Language
--------

- [`const fn` signatures can now include generic trait bounds][93827]
- [`const fn` signatures can now use `impl Trait` in argument and return
  position][93827]
- [Function pointers can now be created, cast, and passed around in a
  `const fn`][93827]
- [Recursive calls can now set the value of a function's opaque
  `impl Trait` return type][94081]

Compiler
--------

- [Linking modifier syntax in `#[link]` attributes and on the command
  line, as well as the `whole-archive` modifier specifically, are now
  supported][93901]
- [The `char` type is now described as UTF-32 in debuginfo][89887]
- The [`#[target_feature]`][target_feature] attribute
  [can now be used with aarch64 features][90621]
- X86 [`#[target_feature = "adx"]` is now stable][93745]

Libraries
---------

- [`ManuallyDrop<T>` is now documented to have the same layout as `T`][88375]
- [`#[ignore = "#"]` messages are printed when running tests][92714]
- [Consistently show absent stdio handles on Windows as NULL handles][93263]
- [Make `std::io::stdio::lock()` return `'static` handles.][93965]
  Previously, the creation of locked handles to stdin/stdout/stderr would
  borrow the handles being locked, which prevented writing
  `let out = std::io::stdout().lock();` because `out` would outlive
  the return value of `stdout()`.
  Such code now works, eliminating a common pitfall that affected many
  Rust users.
- [`Vec::from_raw_parts` is now less restrictive about its inputs][95016]
- [`std::thread::available_parallelism` now takes cgroup quotas into
  account.][92697] Since `available_parallelism` is often used to create a
  thread pool for parallel computation, which may be CPU-bound for
  performance, `available_parallelism` will return a value consistent with
  the ability to use that many threads continuously, if possible.
  For instance, in a container with 8 virtual CPUs but quotas only allowing
  for 50% usage, `available_parallelism` will return 4.

Stabilized APIs
---------------

- [`Pin::static_mut`]
- [`Pin::static_ref`]
- [`Vec::retain_mut`]
- [`VecDeque::retain_mut`]
- [`Write` for `Cursor<[u8; N]>`][cursor-write-array]
- [`std::os::unix::net::SocketAddr::from_pathname`]
- [`std::process::ExitCode`] and [`std::process::Termination`].
  The stabilization of these two API s now makes it possible for
  programs to return errors from `main` with custom exit codes.
- [`std::thread::JoinHandle::is_finished`]

These APIs are now usable in const contexts:

- [`<*const T>::offset` and `<*mut T>::offset`][ptr-offset]
- [`<*const T>::wrapping_offset` and `<*mut T>::wrapping_offset`]
  [ptr-wrapping_offset]
- [`<*const T>::add` and `<*mut T>::add`][ptr-add]
- [`<*const T>::sub` and `<*mut T>::sub`][ptr-sub]
- [`<*const T>::wrapping_add` and `<*mut T>::wrapping_add`][ptr-wrapping_add]
- [`<*const T>::wrapping_sub` and `<*mut T>::wrapping_sub`][ptr-wrapping_sub]
- [`<[T]>::as_mut_ptr`][slice-as_mut_ptr]
- [`<[T]>::as_ptr_range`][slice-as_ptr_range]
- [`<[T]>::as_mut_ptr_range`][slice-as_mut_ptr_range]

Cargo
-----

No feature changes, but see compatibility notes.

Compatibility Notes
-------------------

- Previously native static libraries were linked as `whole-archive` in
  some cases, but now rustc tries not to use `whole-archive` unless
  explicitly requested. This [change][93901] may result in linking errors
  in some cases. To fix such errors, native libraries linked from the
  command line, build scripts, or [`#[link]` attributes][link-attr] need to
  - (more common) either be reordered to respect dependencies between them
    (if `a` depends on `b` then `a` should go first and `b` second)
  - (less common) or be updated to use the [`+whole-archive`] modifier.
- [Catching a second unwind from FFI code while cleaning up from a Rust
  panic now causes the process to abort][92911]
- [Proc macros no longer see `ident` matchers wrapped in groups][92472]
- [The number of `#` in `r#` raw string literals is now required to be
  less than 256][95251]
- [When checking that a dyn type satisfies a trait bound, supertrait
  bounds are now enforced][92285]
- [`cargo vendor` now only accepts one value for each `--sync` flag]
  [cargo/10448]
- [`cfg` predicates in `all()` and `any()` are always evaluated to detect
  errors, instead of short-circuiting.][94295] The compatibility
  considerations here arise in nightly-only code that used the
  short-circuiting behavior of `all` to write something like
  `cfg(all(feature = "nightly", syntax-requiring-nightly))`, which
  will now fail to compile. Instead, use either `cfg_attr(feature
  = "nightly", ...)` or nested uses of `cfg`.
- [bootstrap: static-libstdcpp is now enabled by default, and can
  now be disabled when llvm-tools is enabled][94832]

Internal Changes
----------------

These changes provide no direct user facing benefits, but represent
significant improvements to the internals and overall performance
of rustc and related tools.

- [debuginfo: Refactor debuginfo generation for types][94261]
- [Remove the everybody loops pass][93913]
